This Basic Fall Dress Trend Is Winning Over Every Other

If you’re anything like me, you like to build out a closet of great essential basics. Yep, while a love a dramatic piece or a great trend-driven item, it’s really the foundational basics that ground my wardrobe and get the most wear. But what if I told you that this fall, one of the key basics will also be one of the biggest trends that fashion insiders will get behind? Well, that is exactly what’s about to happen with the rise of minimalist dresses. Excited? Same.

On the F/W 20 runways, we saw brands like Jacquemus, Bottega Veneta, and Dion Lee embracing minimalism, but their designs are infused with cool details that make them feel anything but ordinary. Dresses have cutouts carved out at the hips, one-shoulder silhouettes with exposed backs, and ribbed fabrics in cardigan-like shapes that make them instantly covetable. Ahead, see how fashion insiders are already wearing some of the biggest minimalist dress styles we can expect for fall and shop the edit.

I hate to pick favorites, but the one-shoulder dress has to be one of the minimal silhouettes I’m most drawn to for fall. I think this trend will really permeate fashion in the coming months—not just with dresses but tops as well.

Shop the trend:

On the F/W 20 runways, cutouts were one of the key trends we couldn’t stop talking about. In the world of minimal dresses, openings at the side are especially popular amongst designers.

If you’re after for an easy and versatile piece, look no further than the tank dress. It’s the perfect transitional style to wear right now with platform flip-flops, then with chunky boots and a long coat in the coming months.

With designers from Jacquemus to Bottega Veneta embracing ribbing, you can plan to see this trend explode in the coming months. From collared dresses to ones with collars, there are plenty of cool styles to add to your closet.

Here’s a dress I personally can’t wait to wear. Tube tops have been on the rise so it was only a matter of time before strapless dresses started to pop up. The throwback piece conjures cool, minimal style from the ’90s and I’m very here for it.

Maxi hemlines seem to get more and more popular as we move through 2020. I predict that flowy silhouettes will be especially popular. I’d style one of these dresses with riding boots as temperatures start to cool down.

While tiered dresses might be a huge trend for summer, we’ll also see them carry over to fall. Adding a pair of ankle boots like Angela Fink here and you have the perfect transitional look.
