The 6 Coat Trends I’ll Gladly Embrace Winter For

The conclusion of fall isn’t something I particularly look forward to. By then all of the leaves have dropped, it’s too cold to walk around nonchalantly with anything less than a thick knit sweater, and worst of all it’s pitch black before there’s even a chance to step outside. But for all its bleakness, winter can sort of be fun for the sheer fact that it’s primetime coat season. While you could recycle the same coat from years past, if there’s ever a time to splurge on a little something for youself, it’s now. A great coat not only makes winter feel more bearable for the obvious reason of warmth, but it can also be that little ray of joy that makes getting dressed that much more satisfying. If you’re the type that likes to stay ahead of the trends before everyone else gets to them, might we suggest a coat from this list. From fanciful fringe to larger than life pockets and dark slouchy wool pieces, there’s bound to be a coat that speaks to you. Ahead, you’ll find the 6 upcoming coat trends we predict we’ll be seeing a whole lot more of next year. Scroll below to take your pick.

One could say this trend took off with a big assist from cult label Nanushka. Their vegan leather puffer coats sprung onto the scene a few seasons ago, and still continually sell out (good luck nabbing one!). Whereas traditional puffers can blur the lines of outdoorsy, gorp-core, the leather puffer is like a sophisticated sibling you can actually wear with  tailored pieces and dresses.

What is a “Dad Coat” you ask? Think oversize, wool coats so big they’re borderline obnoxious. Both minimal and statement-making at the same time, the trick with this trend is to keep your styling simple: think classic blue jeans and paired down separates in rich neutral tones. There are different ways to play with shapes too: go for a coat with a belt for the option to create a bold silhouette, or try one with big lapels for more contrasted details. One word of advice though: the slouchier the coat, the better.

Not much has to be explained about the allure of quilted coats; quite simply, they’re extremely comfortable. Almost as if you’re walking around in a blanket, but one you actually won’t be embarrassed to be caught in. We’ve seen this trend interpreted several ways from Ganni’s big collared version to Stand Studio’s and House of Sunny’s brightly colored cropped coats beloved by the Scandi-girl fashion set. If you’re keen on layers, but don’t like to feel too stuffy, a quilted coat gives you that cozy feel without the heft of wool.

Soft to the touch coats will always have a special place in our hearts, and this season is no exception. While teddy coats made a big splash this year, next year’s take incorporates a robe silhouette for a more elevated shape that looks chic with slip dresses or sweatpants.

If you find yourself venturing over to the playful side of trends, this is the coat for you. Whether you prefer your fringe on the sleeve or the hem, this trend is full of fun and whimsy. Alexander Wang’s version is one we predict we’ll be seeing a whole lot of come 2021.

We get that not everyone’s winter consists of multiple inches of snow and sub zero temperatures. If you’re one of those lucky people, you might want to take a look at this shirt meets coat outerwear trend, otherwise known as the shacket. With big pockets, there’s a more utilitarian feel to this coat than the others on this list. Wear it unbuttoned with a chunky knit sweater, or buttoned up over a turtleneck for extra layers when you need them most.
