With the Platinum Delta SkyMiles card, you’ll also earn an annual companion certificate each account anniversary which you can use for a round-trip free flight within the mainland US (plus taxes and fees). Check out our Amex Delta Platinum review! Flights between Salt Lake City and Seattle start at ~17,000 Delta miles round-trip, so the Amex Delta Platinum card’s welcome bonus is enough for 2 round-trip flights worth over $500. (Photo by NextNewMedia/Shutterstock)

Let’s look at what you get with the Platinum Delta SkyMiles card and whether it’s a good fit for your wallet.

Through August 15, 2019, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express is offering an increased welcome bonus of 50,000 Delta miles after spending $3,000 on purchases within the first three months of opening your account. You’ll also receive 50% back in statement credits on purchases made directly with Delta with your card in the first three months, up to $500.

Between the intro bonus of 50,000 Delta miles and at least 3,000 miles from meeting the minimum spending, you’ll have 53,000 Delta miles to use toward award flights.

For example, I was able to find nonstop flights between Los Angeles and New York City in coach for 24,000 Delta miles round-trip. So you could book two coast-to-coast return ticket and still have 5,000 Delta miles left over to use towards one of their incredible SkyMiles flash sales.

Fly Coast to Coast Starting At Just 24,000 Miles Round Trip. With the Welcome Bonus on This Card, and the Miles You'll Earn From Reaching The Minimum Spending Amount for the Welcome Bonus, You Can Fly From Los Angeles to New York 3 Times!
Fly coast to coast for 24,000 Delta miles round-trip with the welcome bonus on the Amex Delta Platinum Card.

Domestic flights generally cost 8,000-25,000 Delta miles round-trip depending on dates and destination. I frequently see flights between Salt Lake City and Seattle (a route I fly frequently) on Delta for just 17,000 Delta miles round-trip in coach, and the ticket usually sells for $250 to $280.

So I could purchase three round-trip tickets on this route for just 51,000 Delta miles total, which is worth over $750.

The Welcome Bonus on The Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card can Purchase 4 Round Trip Award Tickets on This Route Between Salt Lake City and Seattle.
The welcome bonus on The Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card can be worth three round-trip award tickets between Salt Lake City and Seattle worth over $750.

You can squeeze a good amount of travel from the Platinum Delta SkyMiles welcome bonus if you plan your awards!

How to Earn Points With the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Amex Card

With the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card from American Express, you’ll earn Delta SkyMiles for all purchases you make with the card.

There are two categories for bonus miles:

  • Earn 2 Delta miles per dollar spent when you use your card for purchases directly with Delta
  • Earn 1 Delta mile per dollar spent on all other purchases

So you’ll earn double miles on your Delta purchases including flights, SkyClub memberships, Delta Vacations packages, seat upgrades and inflight purchases of food, beverages and audio headsets. All other purchases earn 1 mile per dollar spent.

How to Use Your Miles

To use your Delta miles for award flights, visit the Delta website and search for a flight as you normally would. Delta no longer has an award chart, so you’ll have to check specific dates and routes for the price of an award flight.

At the top of the flight results there is an option to show the price in currency (the default), miles, or Miles + Cash. Select the “miles” option and you can see the cost of each flight in miles, plus any fees you will need to cover out of pocket (generally less than $15 for most domestic flights).

You Can Manage and View Your Current Mileage Balance Online, and Find Award Flights By Selecting "Miles" in the Pay Using Section
You can manage and view your current mileage balance online, and find award flights by selecting “miles” at the top.

Remember, you’ll be able to see Delta flights and flights on their partner airlines. So you’re not just limited to using your miles for Delta flights!

If you can’t find award flights you want, you can still easily redeem miles using Pay With Miles. With Pay With Miles, your miles are worth 1 cent each (in increments of 5,000 miles) toward paid Delta flights. But you’ll typically get much better value by redeeming for award flights.

Benefits of the Delta Platinum Card

Like other American Express cards, this card is packed with great benefits. These perks can help make your flights more comfortable and save you time and money!

Annual Companion Certificate

Each year, upon renewal of your card, you will receive a digital companion certificate that allows you add a second passenger to your domestic round-trip flight reservation (within the contiguous 48 US states) by only paying the taxes and fees for that passenger.

Depending on the route, you can get incredible value from this benefit.

The companion certificate is earned each account anniversary, and the value of the companion flight can be worth more than the annual fee, making this one of the best benefits of this card. You will earn your first companion certificate after renewing your card for the first time.

Delta SkyMiles Miles Boost

With Miles Boost, you can earn 10,000 bonus miles and 10,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) after you spend $25,000 or more in eligible purchases on the card in a calendar year. Folks can earn an additional 10,000 bonus miles and 10,000 MQMs after spending $50,000 in eligible purchases in a calendar year (for a total of up to 20,000 bonus miles each year and 20,000 MQMs each year).

This perk can really boost you toward Medallion® elite status, which offers incredible benefits on Delta flights. After you earn 25,000 MQMs in a year (plus $3,000 MQDs), you’ll achieve Silver Medallion® Delta status.

Silver Elite Status offers:

  • Unlimited complimentary seat upgrades to Comfort+ or first class seating as available 24 hours of departure
  • First checked bag free for you and up to eight travel companions (already offered by the card)
  • Priority check-in
  • Priority boarding (already offered by the card)
  • Exclusive pricing on a CLEAR membership ($79 per year instead of $179 per year)
  • Priority waitlist for seat upgrades
  • Elite status on SkyTeam partner airlines

For folks who are likely to meet the minimum spending requirements each year for this perk, this is an incredible deal! It not only earns you bonus miles toward more award flights (on top of the bonus miles you earn from normal spending), but it also helps you achieve elite status, which leads to valuable benefits while traveling on Delta flights.

First Checked Bag Free

With the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card from American Express, you’ll get your first checked bag for free on Delta flights for yourself and up to eight companions traveling on the same reservation. This normally costs $30 each way ($60 round-trip) per person, so this could be worth up to $540 per round-trip flight if you were traveling with eight other people (9 travelers x $60 round-trip cost per bag).

If you fly Delta frequently, this perk alone can more than cover the annual fee

Priority Boarding

You and up to eight passengers on your reservation can board your flight when Zone 1 Priority Boarding is called. There’s no question that priority boarding takes a lot of stress and annoyance out of the boarding process.

As overhead space is becoming harder to come by, this also ensures you can find a spot for your carry-on luggage right at your seat.

Discounted Delta Sky Club Access

You and up to two traveling companions can stop by a Delta Sky Club lounge for a discounted fee of $29 per person. The lounges offer complimentary snacks and beverages, high-speed Wi-Fi access, satellite TV and private restrooms. If you have a long layover, this can make your wait a lot more enjoyable.

In-Flight Savings

Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card from American Express cardholders save 20% off eligible Delta in-flight purchases when you use the card. This includes food and beverage purchases or audio headsets.

The discount is applied in the form of a statement credit equal to 20% of the purchase total that will be credited to your card at the end of the billing cycle.

Extended Warranty

When you make an eligible purchase with the card, the original manufacturer’s warranty can be extended up to two additional years on eligible warranties of five years or less. So you’ll save money if you would have otherwise paid for a pricey extended warranty!

Return Protection

If you try to return an eligible item within 90 days of the date of purchase with your Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card from American Express and the merchant won’t take it back, you may be refunded the full purchase price, up to $300 per item and a maximum of $1,000 per year.

It’s nice to have that peace of mind.

ShopRunner Membership

This card comes with free ShopRunner membership, which offers free, unlimited two-day shipping at a wide selection of stores. Membership normally costs $79 per year, but you’ll receive this membership at no additional cost as a Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card from American Express card member.

Amex Offers

Amex Offers are targeted discounts or bonus miles on everyday purchases. Just add the deal to your card and make an eligible purchase to earn a statement credit or bonus miles.

Is the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card Worth the Annual Fee?

The annual fee on this card is $195 which is not waived the first year. Whether or not this is worth it for the long term will depend on the amount of travel you do each year with Delta.

For those who frequently travel on Delta, this card can pay for itself between free checked bags and MQMs which can boost you to the next status tier. And the companion certificate you earn each year upon renewal will almost always be worth more than the cost of the annual fee.

Active duty military members can get the annual fee waived by American Express, which makes this an incredible deal.

Does the Platinum Delta Card Have a Foreign Transaction Fee?

No. (See Rates & Fees)

Who Is Eligible for the Platinum Delta Card?

Amex only allows folks to earn the welcome bonus on a card once, per person, per lifetime. So if you’ve had this exact card in the past, you won’t be able to earn the intro bonus a second time.

Otherwise, reports online indicate most folks with good credit would be eligible for this card. Remember that many factors are considered during the application process other than your credit score. So while your credit score can give you an idea on your approval chances, the bank has the final decision.

Customer Support for the Platinum Delta Card

American Express has a terrific reputation, which means you shouldn’t have any problem getting anything resolved or your questions answered. Their customer support and fraud protection is among the best in the industry.

Credit Cards Similar to the Delta Platinum Card

The Platinum Delta SkyMiles card is a great card for Delta flyers who travel frequently. The opportunity to earn MQMs and a companion certificate generally make it worth the annual fee, but depending on your purchase habits and travel frequency, here are other Delta cards to consider:

  • Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express: Lower annual fee of $95 per year (waived the first year) (See Rates & Fees), with a welcome bonus of 30,000 Delta miles after spending $1,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. Plus, you’ll receive 50% back in statement credits on purchases made directly with Delta with your card in the first three months, up to $300. This is also a limited-time offer through August 15, 2019.
  • Delta Reserve® Credit Card from American Express: Premium travel card with a $450 annual fee (See Rates & Fees). Includes a Delta lounge membership and a welcome offer of 40,000 bonus miles and 10,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) after spending $3,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. Great for people who fly on Delta a lot.

Bottom Line

The limited-time increased offer on the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express is a great option for folks who frequently travel with Delta. It has a welcome bonus of 50,000 Delta bonus miles after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first three months of opening your account. And you’ll receive 50% back in statement credits on purchases made directly with Delta with your card in the first three months, up to $500.

If you value Delta elite status and can use money-saving perks like the annual companion certificate and free checked bag, this card is well worth the $195 annual fee. But if you don’t fly Delta frequently, you might consider other Amex Delta cards with a lower fee.
